For The History Buff
Sri Lanka’s history stretches back over 2,500 years, marked by advanced ancient kingdoms like Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, which were renowned for their irrigation systems, architecture, and Buddhist influence. The island was also shaped by traders who sought spices and gems over the centuries, which makes this tear-drop island a fascinating place for history buffs to discover. And our Discover Sri Lanka tour, allows you to immerse yourself in the stories of the past.
On this trip, you’ll summit the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya, where you can marvel at the ingenuity of a 5th-century palace perched atop a massive monolith. On your climb up the steps, you’ll uncover intricate frescoes and panoramic views of an engineered water garden system below. In Polonnaruwa, the island’s medieval capital, you and your group will have the chance to stroll among well-preserved ruins of royal palaces, shrines, and giant stone Buddha statues, each bearing testament to the grandeur of Sri Lanka’s past.
The journey continues to Anuradhapura, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, where sacred stupas and sprawling monasteries evoke the spiritual dedication of early civilisations. One of the last cultural stops on this trip is Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a living museum of history. On your visit, we’d recommend you explore the iconic lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church, and ancient bastions of the Sun and Moon that overlook the Indian Ocean. You and your group will also stop at Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum Complex on the outskirts of Galle Fort, which highlights traditional Sri Lankan culture with exhibits on folk art, tools, and ancient customs. You’ll soon find that each stop on this trip brings this island’s history to life, making it a must for history buffs.
For The Avid Trekker
If you’re searching for the perfect blend of walking and cultural immersion then our Walking in Andalucía trip may be the ideal trip for you in 2025. Andalucía, in southern Spain, is a paradise for walkers, with its rugged mountain ranges, enchanting, whitewashed villages, and sunlit olive groves – and our expert local guides know the routes throughout this region like the back of their hand.
On five out of eight days during this trip, you can choose from Level 2 (Leisurely to Moderate) and Level 4 (Moderate to Challenging) walks, depending on your preference and level of fitness. Level 2 walkers can enjoy gentler routes, such as traversing the Poqueira Gorge, meandering through olive groves, and exploring the charming Alpujarras villages like Pampaneira and Capileira. These walks balance scenic beauty with a relaxed pace. Level 4 walks tackle more demanding trails, including steeper climbs in the Sierra Nevada and Sierra de Grazalema, with highlights like the dramatic Garganta Verde gorge. But both routes include a ticket to the Caminito del Rey (“The King’s Little Path”), one of the most renowned walking trails in the country which clings to the steep walls of the narrow Gaitanes Gorge. Whichever option you choose, both routes are designed to immerse you in Andalucía’s stunning landscapes, authentic villages, and vibrant culture.
When you’re not on the trails, you’ll get to enjoy time in Pampaneira, Bubión, and Capileira – known as the Alpujarras villages. While you’re visiting, why not try Alpujarra Wine, created from indigenous grape varieties and their delicious honey and jam, made from local wildflowers and fruits in the region? You’ll also enjoy a free day in Seville on day five, where you can explore the city’s wonderful tapas bars, the famed Alcazar and La Giralda, which houses Christopher Columbus’ remains. If you’re looking for a trip that’s more than just a simple hike, this walking adventure covers beautiful walking trails which allow you to discover the heart and soul of southern Spain.
