Italian film director, Federico Fellini, may have originally coined the term “La Dolce Vita”, but no one embodies this mindset quite like our local Italian Leader, Veriano Verde. Passionate about showcasing the sheer beauty of the legendary trails, olive groves and quaint limoncello shops dotted along the Amalfi Coast, Veriano encourages his travellers to embrace ‘La Dolce Vita’, in all its forms.
Growing up in the small town of Castellammare di Stabia, on the Gulf of Naples, Veriano said, “My parents always taught me to appreciate the beauty of the Amalfi Coast and would often take me on weekend trips and summer holidays to stay at their house in Agerola, so I always had a love for the outdoors.”
When asked how he became a guide, Veriano explained, “It was a serendipitous turn of events that led me to become a qualified trekking guide. I initially studied engineering and had a side venture owning a bed and breakfast in Agerola, but over the years as I began to explore more of my local area, I quickly fell in love with it. I was, and still am to this day, particularly captivated by the Punta Campanella trail, Baia di Ieranto, and the Sentiero degli Dei.” After a friend encouraged him to enrol in a trekking guide course, he got an unexpected call to lead a group to Monte Tre Calli, and the rest is history. “From that day forward, with every hike I led, my passion grew stronger. I consider myself incredibly fortunate that my “office” is one of the most beautiful and visited places in the world. The idea of going to “work” has never felt burdensome because every day, I’m doing what I love.”
Veriano was keen to emphasise the importance of having a guide, especially for first-time visitors. “Having an expert local guide is essential to truly understanding and appreciating the Amalfi Coast. We provide local expertise, uncover hidden gems, and create unique experiences. It’s about making the journey smooth and stress-free while sharing the stories, legends, and culture that make this place so special.”
To Veriano, “La Dolce Vita”, is about embracing a lifestyle that prioritises joy, beauty, and connection. “It’s a philosophy that encourages everyone to slow down, appreciate the world around them, and find happiness in everyday life. I strongly believe that it doesn’t matter if you’ve lived on the Amalfi Coast all your life or you’re just passing through, everyone who visits can’t help but embrace “La Dolce Vita”. You see, the magic of this region lies in its unparalleled natural beauty, rich culinary traditions, and the warm, welcoming spirit of its people, and this is what I aim to show on every trip I lead.”
His favourite trek is undoubtedly, “the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods)” Veriano said. “It’s more than just a hike; it’s a journey through time and myth. I love to see the awe and wonder in travellers’ eyes when they walk this trail for the first time and hear the legends behind this incredible route. I particularly enjoy taking travellers to the shepherd’s hut, it’s a special place on the path.”
If you’re looking for another incredible hike to do, Veriano recommends the optional walk around Mount Vesuvius with an expert volcanologist, if weather permits, on our Walking the Amalfi Coast trip. “Mount Vesuvius is one of the most famous and active volcanoes in the world, with a rich geological history. Walking around the crater with an expert offers unparalleled insights into volcanic processes, the types of rocks, and the signs of activity. The views of the Bay of Naples from the summit are spectacular and unforgettable.”
But it’s not all about the hikes, “La Dolce Vita”, can also mean physically indulging in the sweeter things in life, so while you’re in the region, Veriano recommends visiting L’Alambicco in Agerola. “It’s an exceptional family-run limoncello business, where three passionate brothers pour their expertise into every aspect of their craft.” If you don’t have a sweet tooth, Veriano suggested that you give Scialatielli all’Amalfitana a try. “This fresh, thick pasta is typical of the Amalfi Coast. It’s often served with a rich seafood sauce made from clams, mussels, shrimp, and squid, cooked with garlic, cherry tomatoes, white wine, and parsley – it’s a dish not to be missed.”
Other local dishes Veriano recommends include Spaghetti con Colatura di Alici di Cetara, a traditional fish sauce from the town of Cetara, and Delizia al Limone, a sweet lemon delight that perfectly encapsulates the zesty flavours of the Amalfi Coast.
When it comes to cultural festivals Veriano explained, “The municipality of Agerola organizes the Festival Sui Sentieri Degli Dei every year. During the summer, various events take place every evening, including musical concerts, festivals dedicated to typical products such as fior di latte (mozzarella made from cow’s milk), and religious processions. These events aim to keep our local traditions alive.”
He continued, “My favourite event is L’Alba Magica (The Magic Dawn), which is traditionally celebrated on 15th August. The night before, at sunset, people hike to the summit of Monte Tre Calli via ancient mule tracks, set up huts and barbeque, and wait until dawn. At sunrise, local music bands perform the notes of Ennio Morricone. The moment is truly magical. If you have time to join the festivities before your trip starts or extend your trip by a couple of days to see this, I’d highly recommend it.”
For those looking to truly experience the island of Capri, which you can do on your free day on our Walking the Amalfi Coast and Highlights of Amalfi Coast trip, Veriano suggests doing a mix of walks, sightseeing and shopping. “Start your adventure by walking along Via Pizzolungo and Via Krupp, where you can soak in the stunning landscapes and escape the crowds. For cultural enthusiasts, Capri offers Villa Jovis, Villa Lysis, la Certosa di San Giacomo, and other historical landmarks.”
Reflecting on this breathtaking region, Veriano said, “I have a deep affection for the triangle of Amalfi, Ravello, and Atrani. This trio of towns perfectly captures the genuine essence of the Amalfi Coast – a flawless combination of natural beauty, rich history, and thriving local culture. When you’re here, it feels like time stands still in the best possible way. Everyone should experience this place at least once in their lifetime.”
