CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

A fabulous adventure, exploring a stunningly beautiful part of Croatia. Great company, spectacular sceanery, challenging cycle routes (no-one told me it was a hilly place before I went) and wonderful ice-cream – what more could you want?

Most Inspirational Moment

The best cycling day was definatly the last - the downhill coastal path was breathtaking, and we stopped for photos so many times that we missed lunch! However, my personal highlight was when we were joined by a pod of dolphins in the water on the ferry crossing from Hvar to the mainland - absolutely brilliant watching them jump playfully in the water around the boat.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Bojan is new to Exodus and did a great job organising and motivating such a diverse group of people. He was great fun, very sociable and was up to the challenges of games of tennis and ping-pong laid down by various members of the group (and he always won, I warn you now). He's also pretty good at eating ice-cream too, and you can be assured he'll point out the best places in town.  His sense of humour was fantastic, and he seemed to really understand how to get the best out of each cyclist, offering the right amount of support to help us all achieve our full cycling potential.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Looking back on the trip, overall I would say that it was fantastic, and I have come home with a great desire to visit the Dalmatian Coast again. The beaches and islands are absolutely beautiful, and cycling gives you the opportunity to explore the less well travelled paths (such as the coastal path on the last day). However, I would say that a few of us found that we were slightly unprepared for the level of fitness required for some of the more "undulating" routes! The first day includes a 10km uphill stretch, and if that doesn't mean that much to you (as it didn't to me before I went) then it means peddling uphill continuously for a very long time!! I certainly wasn't fit enough for it, and walked part of the way (and I wonder whether this climb ought to be removed from the trip) The second day also has a pretty long uphill stretch, which was very tough going in the heat, with a head wind - I guess I would advise you to carefully consider the time of year that you go, do some training beforehand to get the most enjoyment out of your holiday and, for the novices amoungst you, I would advise learning a little bit about how to work with your gears and how to maximise your efficeincy when cycling on very "undulating" terrain. But when cycling along the coast, every "up" must have its "down" and the downhill stretches were absolutely amazing. As for other practical details: wear layers on the jounrney out to Croatia - it was about 8 degrees when I left my home in the morning, and about 28 degrees as we wandered round Split in the evening, so you want to make sure you're dressed for both! ATMs were widely available and we ended up spending about 50 kuna on lunch, and 100 kuna on dinner (minus drinks). (Ice cream was only 8 kuna!!). Other advice - wear lots of sun-screen and you don't need a water-back-pack (all the bikes have a water bottle holder). Consider isotonic sports drinks if going in the summer, as we ended up drinking huge amounts of water and yes - people did wear padded cycling shorts! Charging cameras and phones was not a problem, so go wild with your photos (and don't forget to look out for the dolphins on the crossing!)

ANDES TO AMAZON June 2011

This was a fabulous trip which exceeded expectations. Mainland Ecuador tends to go under the radar – definitely a mistake. This trip was full of variety – Ecuador is a diverse country indeed. From jungle to volcanoes to paramos to calderas to markets to World Heritage towns – this trip had a huge variety of activities and sights.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing 4 volcanoes at once. Also the Cajas National Park was simply amazing for its scenery and vegetation. And I loved seeing the scarlet macaws.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Javier was superb. He was very knowledgeable and great fun to be with. We even enjoyed his jokes! He was always looking for ways to improve our experience. His command of English was very good and he gave us a real insight into Ecuadorian life. A wonderful guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure that you take a headlight for the jungle (there is no electricity in the chalets). Also take thick socks - we wore gumboots/wellingtons twice for muddy walks and thick socks made them much more comfortable. Also, make sure you take your hiking boots or good walking shoes/trainers - we did more walking than expected - all optional - I thought the walking greatly added to the experience.

ANDES TO AMAZON

Overall quite a good trip but in my opinion lacking more time in interesting parts of the country – mainly the rainforest.

Most Inspirational Moment

All the wild places and valleys and mountains plus the volcanoes and the rainforest.

Thoughts on Group Leader

10 out of 10 for knowledge, patience, tolerance and being very easy going.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for a diverse selection of environments and places of interest.

WALKING IN THE WESTERN DOLOMITES

This trip was the perfect combination for me – great scenery, varied walks, excellent hotel, amazing food and a great group of people. Eric led the group B walks and he was the perfect leader.

Most Inspirational Moment

Drawing the curtains back on the first morning, having arrived in rain and darkness the night before, and seeing the beautiful mountains!Seeing the incredible views after a slog up a steep slope! The wild flowers. They were so abundant and beautiful.Swimming and relaxing in the steam room before dinner - what luxury!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eric was relaxed but in control, which is no mean feat when you have a group of 17 or so. He briefed us about the next day's walk every evening. He had alternatives in case of bad weather. We had a storm after lunch one day and Eric changed the route so that we got down as fast as possible. Then the bus didn't arrive so he arranged a taxi for us all while we waited in a cafe. He was a great group leader and I'm sure he could handle anything. He knew lots about the area, plants, etc too. He was a lovely, knowledgable, good humoured guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Believe the trip notes when it says take a warm hat and gloves. It was late June and the weather on the last few days was variable. We got caught in a storm and it hailed. I was very glad of my hat, gloves and waterproof trousers!I had a hydration system and everyone envied it.Take a walking pole (or two). I'd never used one before and I was glad of it on the gravelly slopes, some of which are quite steep.

PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI

Another great photographic safari.  This was supposedly the "low" season – there is no low season in the Mara.  The sightings, photographic opportunities and general experience are as good as the peak season. Everyone involved as always puts everything into making the trip a success.  If you haven’t been on one of these trips you are missing out.

Most Inspirational Moment

At this time of year (June) the scenery is fantastic with long golden grasslands combined with fresh green short grass.  On this trip we saw an abundance of Leopards and seeing 3 together in the same tree was amazing.  However probably the most awe inspiring was the storm clouds that amassed on our last evening.  They were like something from an apocalyptic movie with black storm clouds on one side and clear skies on the other (and we avoided most of the massive downpour that followed).

Thoughts on Group Leader

As always inspirational,  demanding and does everything to make the trip and your photography a success

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: DOBBIACO

A wonderful all-round experience amongst the glorious scenery of the Dolomites . I just keep going back ! ( Is it 8 or 9 times now ? )

Most Inspirational Moment

The descent down the old military road after lunch at 2000 metres .

Thoughts on Group Leader

Albert , whom I have known over several ski trips , was his usual friendly competent self ; easy to get on with , well organised and delightful company . David ( who led the other group and was also well known to me  ) was equally so .

Advice for Potential Travellers

Look forward to a great holiday with a superb variety of ski days under good leaders and a comfortable stay in a friendly family - owned hotel .

WALKING IN ANDALUCIA

A fabulous holiday.  Cortijo Rosario has very friendly welcoming staff and fabulous food.  The walks are lovely and although we had unusually hot weather (even for June), we enjoyed every moment.

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to decide between the last two days as both walks were in the hills with stunning views.  Perhaps the walk to the El Chorro Gorge just gets top spot, particularly as we finished the afternoon with a swim in the lake opposite the King's summer residence!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fantastic, could not have been better!

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you go in June, take lots of sun block!

CLASSIC DOLOMITES

At first I did wonder if, in my haste, I had chosen the wrong trip…I desperately needed a rest and the itinerary seemed packed. However, there was time for both, I had a day to myself in the wonderfully relaxing Hotel Adler and when I was ready to walk the pace was ideal. In the end I was sad to leave so early.

Most Inspirational Moment

In terms of the trip itinerary then the final days walk up to Monte Piano and the stunning views from the top, however, a lazy afternoon walk around a balmy Villabassa, the tranquility of the park, the green mountains against an azure blue sky and  the beautiful dome of the church were just as fulfilling.

Thoughts on Group Leader

I've lead groups before and what impressed me were the little things, a very experienced walker and leader, always making sure the pace was right which can only come from experience. Very knowledgeable and approachable and someone you'd have total confidence in, in terms of walking up a mountain.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Walking poles, I've fell walked for years and never used any but did buy some locally and they made a huge difference. Would also thoroughly recommend the crazy golf and funbob at Innichen for a day off.

WALKING IN THE WESTERN DOLOMITES

A really great holiday with varied scenary which was fantastic.  A great area for walking.

Most Inspirational Moment

The fantastic views from the summits and passes in the mountains.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Albert was a fantastic group c leader.  He took account of weather conditions to plan the best walk for each day with alternatives if weather conditions dictated. Every day was a great walk with different scenary and fantastic wild flowers and several marmot sitings.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We really enjoyed the walking in this area and the hotel was great.  We really enjoyed the food and used the pool and leisure facilities each evening which were great after a hard days walking

CLASSIC DOLOMITES

– Location : Beautiful, magnificient views during the walk.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting lost while mountain biking on the day off my walking holiday. I somehow ended up on the walking track and struggled to ride up (actually push the bike up two thirds of the way to the top of Putzalm. It started to rain soon after I reached the top and I had a white knuckle ride down the wet mountain track as I nearly flipped the bike over a couple of times due to the steepness of the descent.I am more of a biking holiday type, but I still enjoyed my walking holiday.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Terrible taste in music, we all had to listen to the Macdonalds/Pizza hut/KFC song everyday on our way to and back from the walks in the Exodus van. For my trip mates having withdrawal symptons (especially IAN) the link to the song is below...  enjoyhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTaJ7fmH9qE

Advice for Potential Travellers

- Put plenty of sunscreen, especially on your lips. The sun is deceptive strong in the cool mountain air.
