We had a great week in Italy’s Cilento and Amalfi Coast. The group got along well and our guide Paolo was amazing! The coast was busy and roads narrow at some areas but with the confidence and guidance of Paolo we made it thru it all. The views well worth it all!
Most Inspirational Moment
The best day for me was the first day where we cycled all day in hot weather, had an amazing lunch and then ended the day with a boat ride to the blue grotto. The swim in the sea was the perfect way to end a long hot day in the saddle.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Witout Paolo this trip would not have been as amazing as it was. With his guidance, we always felt safe and well looked after. He planned every minute of our day to perfection including adjusting for weather and group preferences. He even booked all our dinners making it so easy for us to relax after our rides knowing we did not have to plan anything. He was truly the best part of the trip!
Advice for Potential Travellers
This trip was amazing but be ready for busy roads.
A billiant ride along the coast
This cycling trip was an amazing way to see the region. The days before Amalifi we’re a great mix of seaside views, authentic food and rustic towns. There aren’t too many tourists around which is really nice. It feels like the real Italy. We then spent the last 3 days in Amalafi which although beautiful (and my reason for doing the trip), wasn’t as great as the inital days. You get used to the smaller towns and less people, so coming to Amalfi can feel like a bit of a shock. The cycling itself was good, some tough climbs, but worth the reward of the views you see. We did cycle in 30 degree with no cloud cover each day which made it challenging, but it was well managed by our tour leader giving us ample breaks and time for water. Overall it was a fantastic trip and one I very much enjoyed.
A great trip to a beautiful part of Italy
Cycling holidays in Italy are always good – it’s the combination of the exercise, the food and the towns and this one gives you the amazing Amalfi coast as well. The trip is a great way to see it . The main towns of Amalfi and Positano are pretty popular these days and so cycling to / through them gives you the highlights and the views without over-exposure to the crowds. Minori, where we stay the last three nights, is a good base and much quieter. The first few cycling days are off the beaten track, with less traffic, nice villages / harbours plus the excellent Ancient Greek site of Paestum. A nice balance with good accommodations throughout.
Most Inspirational Moment
The last day of cycling - cycling the Amalfi coast road itself and going over the hill to Sorrento for lunch with the view of Vesuvius across the bay. The ‘free day’ walk up to Ravello and then down to Amalfi itself was wonderful too. And Paestum!
Thoughts on Group Leader
Super. Paulo is experienced, calm and knowledgeable, has excellent English and is very good company. Emilio our driver/ mechanic was excellent too.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Compared with the two other Exodus ‘moderates’ we’ve done, this has shorter distances but longer ascents. As my wife isn’t keen on long ascents, and as I like to take lots of photos on the way, we decided to have e-bikes. It worked very well. Our group of 11 was pretty fast. Having E-bikes meant that we caused very little ‘waiting / catching up’ time and we never worried about how we would do on the tougher days. We generally kept in the middle of the group unless I was taking photos and fell behind. The e-bikes were of course heavier than normal but easy to get used to and had great battery life. I was worried it would mean no exercise but in fact I was in control and could still give myself a work out. I mainly used ‘eco’ unless I was behind and catching-up the group. The e-bike made the trip for my wife . After ten group cycling holidays, we were thinking of packing it in, but we now know we can continue something we really enjoy. The e-bike made this otherwise tricky ‘moderate’ very doable for us. Note: cycling the Amalfi coast road takes a bit of getting used to. It seems pretty ‘hairy’ when you start early in the morning; there are plenty of buses and motor bikes as well as cars and if you’re a nervous rider it may not be for you. But you do get used to it and you realise that the locals generally know what they’re doing. When you come back in the afternoon it’s less busy, you know what to expect and it’s fantastic - the highlight of the trip and a memorable day’s cycling you won’t forget.
Cycling Cilento and Amalfi coast
Great cycling, beautiful sceneries, lovely company
Most Inspirational Moment
Cycling from Minori to Sorrento and back tackling the big four
Thoughts on Group Leader
Lovely! Kind, attentive, knowledgeable providing useful and reliable information and guidance
Advice for Potential Travellers
The terrain is undulating but doable with a reasonable level of fitness
Great Cycling and Great Guide
Arrived in Naples to heavy rain….however Sunday started cloudy but warm and the weather just kept improving. Hotels were very good, perhaps Hotel Rita could be improved in the evening meal and breakfast (Buffalo Burgers – avoid). Lunchtimes gave us a good variety of Italian food. Cycling on the actual Amalfi coast is “interesting” but we all survived. Great views throughout the whole holiday with some hills to test your legs and lungs. Just the right amount of history and monuments. The ‘free day’ gave us a great (lots of steps) walk.
Most Inspirational Moment
Memorable moments rather than inspiring was eating fresh mulberries at our lunchtime stop, who could forget our very cheery host. Watching fireflies was brilliant. The Temples etc at Paestum was amazing
Thoughts on Group Leader
Paolo, what a great leader, lots of interesting information pitched at the right time with the right amount of detail, really helped to make the holiday full and terrific. The bike support was excellent .
Wonderful biking adventure on the Amalfi Coast
8 bikers and our wonderful guide Sara enjoyed a beautiful week visiting the Cilento National Park and Amalfi Coast.
Most Inspirational Moment
All our riders completed the five days of biking covering more than 240 km of undulating terrain and with vertical climbs totaling over 4000 meters. None of us needed to use the support van at any time during the rides.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Sara was a very knowledgeable and experienced guide who provided us with much local knowledge and insights. She made sure that all riders were doing well and staying safe along the challenging route. Sara also provided us with optional walking tours in addition to the standard itinerary. Sara showed genuine enthusiasm for her work.
Advice for Potential Travellers
As others have stated, it would be very helpful to try to prepare on some hills. The electric bike may be a consideration to take a little of the edge off the longer climbs.
The holiday I didn't know I needed
A lovely itinerary, brilliant leader, really nice group, trip well paced and everything was so thoughtfully organised.
Most Inspirational Moment
There wasn't just one - the whole thing was great, riding without my sunglasses so I could enjoy the colour of the hills and think how lucky I am that I can do trips like this.
Thoughts on Group Leader
- Paolo is an excellent leader - He was calm and clear throughout - Our safety was paramount in his mind and he was always looking out for us - The organisation was excellent, always lovely lunches and dinners - a lot of that seemed down to the relationships Paolo in his network - Not only was he accomplished in the area of cycling, he is also clearly passionate about the history of the region and its impact on society - He also had great support staff such as Emilio and Raphaello
Advice for Potential Travellers
Some people ponder over the 3 / moderate rating - I think it's accurate as we took plenty of (needed) breaks to recharge. However there are plenty of hills and so inevitably there will be challenging moments. It was a really friendly group - ranging in age from 49 to 82 - and a mix of standard and e-bikes, so there was something for everyone.
Variety, stunning cycling and a great group leader
This was a truly lovely trip with a range of experiences and highlights. Starting in the quieter and underrated region to the south and finishing in the much more touristy area of Amalfi, the scenery is – of course – beautiful throughout, the hotels are good and the food delicious. Paulo is a superb guide. He and his assistant Emilio (and other members of the local team when needed) worked tirelessly to make sure we had the best possible holiday – nothing was too much trouble. Everything was super-organised and well-communicated with a briefing each evening about what to expect the next day. And we learned lots about Italy – from its ancient past to the issues it faces today, with insight about plants, agriculture and tourism – and anything we wanted to know or discuss – along the way. It’s an undulating route and there are some long hills – but the gradient is steady and (mostly) reasonable and there’s no shortage of rewarding views. The final day from Minori to Sorrento and back comes in at around 1,500m elevation (according to Strava), although there’s the option to go in the van for the long steep climb out of Sorrento. However, this trip is not for the faint-hearted – the Amalfi Coast road is stunning, but very busy with traffic (even for someone that cycles in London); cars, buses, lorries, scooters, etc pass constantly and often pretty close. In some ways it’s all part of the vibe, but it’s potentially unnerving for less experienced riders.
Most Inspirational Moment
Hard to pick just one…
Thoughts on Group Leader
Echoing everything said in previous reviews and noted above, Paulo is an exceptional group leader - highly-experienced, confidence-inspiring, knowledgeable, calm and affable , he makes the tour the success that it is.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Definitely worth doing some hill practice beforehand!
Exodus Travels Holiday Feedback
What a Wonderful Cycling Holiday We have just returned from the “Cycle Cilento & the Amalfi Coast” trip and have had a wonderful time throughout. We made our own way from Manchester early before the Cycling part of our holiday and met “Paolo” our most excellent Tour Guide at Napoli Airport to join the party to get the transfer to our 1st Base. Paolo is a most excellent guide and we have enjoyed his expertise and knowledge throughout the trip. He put us all at ease straight away and always explained what was going to happen and we thoroughly enjoyed his daily briefings for the next stages of the trip. The Support Staff and Vehicle throughout the Cycling Days was fantastic for water top ups, Bananas and Nuts for extra energy was most welcome especially on the 3 Long cycling days. Paolo was fully supportive throughout the whole Holiday experience and catered for the varied cycling experience. The Accommodation at each location was excellent and there were a number of Group Meals (we pay for) arranged although you could opt out of a couple we did not as we enjoyed the company of the other holiday riders. The Local Foods were amazing to try and see for the 1st time. The Final Hotel and Location in Minori was most excellent. Although some of the days riding was tough in parts (remember it hilly here) it was a thoroughly enjoyable holiday and thankfully we had put some longer ride practice in at home before hand. I am not ashamed to say the Gel Seat I brought with me meant no pains for the whole holiday. There were some new additions to the itinerary which needs updating on the schedule info and the addition to the last day to Sorento was excellent – Well worth that final big 4k hill out of Sorento. If you like Cycling you will thoroughly enjoy this trip and experiences.
Most Inspirational Moment
There were many but being able to complete the famous 4k hill out of Sorento on the last day without stopping was one of the best highlights and gave you the energy to complete the rest of the day along the Amalfi Coast Road.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Paolo is a most excellent guide and we have enjoyed his expertise and knowledge throughout the trip. He put us all at ease straight away and always explained what was going to happen and we thoroughly enjoyed his daily briefings for the next stages of the trip. He always doubled back to check on the riders especially those at the back. Paolo was a Skilled communicator and always dealt with issues professionally and calmly. Also a special shout out for the Support Staff and Vehicle throughout the Cycling Days was fantastic for water top ups, Bananas and Nuts for extra energy was most welcome especially on the 3 Long cycling days. Paolo was fully supportive throughout the whole Holiday experience and catered for the varied cycling experience.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Yes I would advise to consider Gel seat Cover as there are varied seat types, although they can change seats if required. The Gel seat cover ensured I never suffered throughout the long rides. Small Phone / Item Bag is provided on front of bike so you do not need to bring your own. Make sure you practice some long days riding using any new cycling shorts equipment etc to test it out for your liking.
What a great week!
Everything about this holiday I found very enjoyable. It was October and the holiday season was drawing to a close but the sea was warm and inviting. The cycling was manageable and took us to interesting and historical locations. The week was varied, beginning in the little known Cilento region, which was quiet and pretty, with picturesque stopping off places, including beautiful villages. From the amazing historic town of Paestum we caught a train to Salerno and continued our tour cycling along the dramatic and busy Amalfi coast. Our leader, Paulo and his assistant Emilio did an excellent job and they had their work cut out as there were 17 of us. The day it rained heavily we took a bus and walked around Amalfi and Ravello. The food was really delicious. I even developed a taste for Lemoncello! The hotels were very good, my favourites were the ones with pools. The agritourismo we stayed in was in a lovely location and their meals were delicious. I particularly liked the bruchetta they served for breakfast made with local oil and tomatoes.
Most Inspirational Moment
Our last and longest cycle was from Minori to Sorrento, which was 77km. Dropping down the incline along quiet, windy lane into Sorrento was great after the ride along the coast.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Paolo, our group leader was outstanding. He's well organised and calm. He has excellent communication skills, masses of local knowledge and loads of Italian charm.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Take lots of layers as the weather in October can be changeable. I was pleased I took waterproof footwear.
