What’s the weather like in Italy?
Italy’s climate varies throughout the country but visitors can expect hot, dry summers and fairly cold, rainy winters. Similar to the UK, spring and autumn can bring both pleasant weather and cooler, wetter conditions.
Central and southern Italy experience the hottest, driest summer months with the major cities seeing temperatures of up to 40 degrees in July and August. October and November see the most rainfall in the north of the country, while the Italian Alps is the place to go for winter snow activities.
How many days is ideal for a trip to Italy?
Our tours to Italy take place over six to 15 days, with most of our trips lasting eight days in total. The exact length depends on the tour and itinerary chosen but we’ve tailored all our Italy trips to make sure you get the most out of your visit.
Along with organised activities and sightseeing, you’ll often get free time in your itinerary to soak up the atmosphere and explore or relax however you want.
FAQs on Tours in Italy
We’ve collated answers to frequent questions about our tours in Italy. If you still need more information, contact our expert team who will be happy to help.
You can travel to Italy if you have a passport that’s valid for three months after the date you plan to depart the country. You don’t need a visa for trips to Italy for a period of 90 days or less.
The items you’ll need to take depends on your selected Italy tour, any activities, and the time of year you’ll be travelling. For example, hiking and trekking tours will require sturdy footwear and appropriate clothing. Choose lightweight clothing for the warmer summer months and take sun cream and a hat. For colder months you might consider layers and waterproofs.
Other items come down to personal preference, but you might wish to include a camera, phrase book, and swimwear.
In an emergency, you can use European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or UK Global Health Insurance Card to gain access to any required medical treatment. But it’s important to note that these are not designed to replace your travel insurance.

The Euro. While you can change your currency on your trip, you might find it cheaper and easier to exchange your money before you go.
If you do need any help locating a bureau de change whilst on your trip to Italy, our local guides can point you in the right direction.
According to Skyscanner, the average flight time between the UK and Rome, Italy’s capital, is around two and a half hours. Exact flight times will vary slightly depending on which UK airport you’re travelling from and your destination in Italy.
The ideal time of year will depend on your specific tour or activity of choice. For example, you might want to choose a cooler time of year to experience an Italian cycling holiday. Or perhaps you want to make the most of balmy, sun-filled days by the beach or experience a scenic summer boat trip.
When considering the best time of year for your Italy tour, you might want to think about how busy it’s likely to be. The summer months from June to September attract the most tourists. As July and August can see sweltering temperatures, it might be wise to avoid major cities such as Rome and Florence at this time if you’d rather skip the crowds and heat.
Holiday seasons such as Christmas and Easter can be wonderful times for an Italy trip to experience the local festivities. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that some attractions, activities, and shops may close or operate restricted hours during these times.
Absolutely. Our small groups are made up of like-minded adventurers, keen to explore Italy and share their experiences with others. Many life-long friendships have been forged on our Italy tours, while our tour leaders are very experienced in bringing groups together.
Our extensive range of Italy trips include some of the most popular destinations: Tuscany, the Amalfi Coast, Sicily and Rome to name a few. However, our aim is always to go beyond the tourist hotspots, using the local knowledge of our tour leaders to show you their Italy.
Like the country itself, Italy has a wide range of places to stay, from rural agriturismos (farmstays) to the cave hotels of Matera. In general, we use small, locally owned accommodation wherever possible. If you’d prefer a little bit of luxury, opt for one of our Premium Adventures, in which we end most nights in stylish accommodation.
Your packing list will depend on where you are going and the season. To help, each of our Trip Notes includes an essential equipment section, which details the must-haves for your luggage.
Our trips to Italy have group sizes of four to 16 people. You’ll always be joined by a Tour Leader, plus any other support staff needed for your adventure.
Tipping is not a necessity in Italy but is common in restaurants and for other services – typically around 10%. Some restaurants will add a servizio to your bill, meaning your tip is included.
